ORN: Last night, I did five miles in 58:10, which was a miracle since it was 90-95°. This morning, when it was a chilly 85° at 0500, I ran three more in 34:04. My times have been sucking lately, but speaking only for the last two days, I can offer a couple good explanations.
First, it's been wicked hot. My people come from the land of the ice and snow. We only ran in the heat when we were running from our long boats to raid villages in the more temperate regions of Southern Europe. Then, we'd kill everyone and take their stuff and run back to the boats to sail back to the fjords. In other words, I am genetically predisposed to hate the heat. [Note to self: maybe running with a battle ax, steel helmet, and shield would help.]
Second, my running has been sporadic this summer. All year, really. After last night's run, I was scribbling a brief note in my running log, and my daughter asked me what I was doing. I started explaining how I kept a running journal so that I could go back later and see what I've done, and as I flipped through the pages, I was disheartened to see all the blank spaces. It seems like every couple weeks, after a week or two of being very good, I hit a bad patch and don't run for 5 -7 days. Embarrassing.
But, I am pretty proud of myself this week. I essentially ran a 8 mile double since yesterday, with my fiver and my three miler barely eight hours apart. I've got 12 miles logged this week, with 15 a sure thing since I have that race on Saturday. If I can run my planned seven miler, I'll have a 22 mile week. That would be awesome. We shall see though.
Thank Frigga, I have a rest day tomorrow, though. I'm feeling the last three days.

Did you get a break in the heat finally? In Iowa, today is sign of hope that we may get back to normal. I laughed so hard at the first part of your post about being predisposed to cold. God love fall running and here it comes!
ReplyDeleteHoly crap! A reader!
ReplyDeleteRight now, Firefox is telling me it is 84°, which is about 20° cooler than it was the day before yesterday, and I am not exaggerating for once. I don't expect the weather to break for good yet. I'm only hoping it is reasonable tomorrow night for my race and Sunday morning for my 7 mile long run. Apart from those times, the weather gods can vent their wrath upon us all they want as far as I am concerned.
