Still sick and on the sidelines so I thought it might be interesting to list some of my favorite songs to run by. Feel free to post in the comments your favorites too.
My power song is "I Got it Made" by The Skatenigs. The power song is the song you set in the Nike+ doo dad to give you that extra juice when you run. With lyrics like "It's my world/C**cksuckin', motherf**ckin' goddamn right/Doin' what I want is my way of life" and a driving punk/industrial beat [produced or at least strongly influenced by Al Jorgensen], it's not hard to really stomp the terrain with this blasting your ear holes. I just learned this but totally get it: lead singer of Skatenigs sang vocals on the Revolting Cocks classic, "Beers, Steers, and Queers." Good stuff.
There is usually a lot of ska in my playlists. After all, if ska dancing [skanking] is a scalar, then running is the corresponding vector. Ergo, running is like skanking in the forward direction. Practically anything in the ska genre is well suited for running to. Some notables to start you out with: "Ranking Full Stop" by the English Beat, "One Step Beyond" by Madness, "Healthy Body" by Operation Ivy, "Ba Ba Riba Skank" by Dennis Alcapone and Lizzy, and nearly anything by Desmond Dekker.
Many Podcasts are perfect workout lengths [30-60 minutes], and there are a ton out there for every conceivable interest. For me, you cannot beat the CBC Radio 3 podcast. Every Friday host Grant Lawrence throws down an hour's worth of the best Canadian independent music -- every genre, all new music. You posers think you're down with the Arcade Fire? I heard them first on the Radio 3 podcast. Feist? Heard her first on the CBC. Every year, they do a "Sweatin' to the Indies" show that is ideal for one of those long runs, complete with a warmup, a slow build to a peak, and then a cool down. Also good is the CHUD podcast, but only if you can handle movie nerds, potty jokes, and sick, offensive trash talk. I'll probably get locked up listening to CHUD for laughing so much; people will think I am an escaped lunatic.
I could write more. I love music; I love listening to my iPod while I run. There's a ton of songs I could identify as particularly useful for running purposes, but I have rambled long enough. What are some of your favorite sounds to run to?
