in step with my instep

I have to give a shout out to my favorite running-related product of the moment -- Powerstep Pinnacle Insoles. OK, insoles aren't the most sexy, high-tech pieces of gear I could hope to write about, but my footsie-wootsies say otherwise. You see, after I started running again in July, I developed what I later learned was plantar fasciitis, an annoying pain in the thick band of tissue in front of your heel. It turns out that I have slightly flat feet. I never knew that. Yet another benefit of getting your shoes at a running store instead of a big-box discount store that rhymes with Fall Start: advice from someone that actually knows runners and their feet.

So two weeks ago, I go shopping for winter running clothes at my local shop, Ken Combs' Running Store. I am flabbergasted at the prices of the high quality clothes they sell. That's not a slam against Ken Combs. I'm just cheap. So I figure that if I am going to spend more than $50, I might as well replace my running shoes, a pair of 2005 Nike Pegasuses with the tread nearly gone and a hole forming over the left big toe. But before I shop for shoes, I want to find something that will help me with my sore foot.

Along comes the helpful, smart saleswoman. She shoos me away from the cheap instep straps and suggests a $30 pair of insoles (the Powerstep Pinnacles, hyperlinked above) and suggest I wear them all the time.

Long story short, I buy the insoles and a new pair of Nikes, and I notice improvement instantly. I have never been more a believer in the right shoe and the right orthotics until I walked out of that store. While the jury is still out on the shoes [not bad shoes, but I've only just started running in them,] I feel the benefit each time I put on a pair of shoes with the insoles. They just work. At first it feels like there's something in my shoe, a lump of toilet paper or something [I have a three year old.] Then, the sharp pains melt away. Ahh. I wear them in my work shoes, my casual shoes, and of course my running shoes. If I could figure out how to glue them to my feet while barefoot [I am a Kentuckian], I would probably do it. They are just great.

Tell your friends.
